| Vanuatu welcomes record number of arrivals. | |
Last year Vanuatu tourism hailed a new record in tourism, with a 15 percent increase in visitor arrivals compared to the prior year.
According to latest tourism figures, 2012 was the best year on record, even exceeding the previous 2009 record, with arrivals jumping to 108,161 visitors compared to 93,960 the prior year.
Cruising arrivals also took a positive turn, with more cruise ships sailing to the island than ever before, and boosting passenger numbers by 41 percent, from 147,938 in 2011 to 218,667 in 2012.
The Australian market continued to be the island’s number one source of tourism, holding 61 percent of the market share, ahead of New Zealand and New Caledonia.
Aiming to maintain growth figures, Vanuatu Tourism Office general manager Linda Kalpoi said the tourist bureau would capitalize on partnerships in 2013, to target a ten percent further growth in arrivals.
“Our marketing efforts will concentrate on our major markets of Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia and also support to build the secondary markets of Europe, USA and some Asian countries,” she explained.
